COVID-19 - When to Contact the School Nurse

Greetings Falcon Families!

First, we wanted to share our congratulations to our Varsity Football Team who won the South Carolina AAAA State Championship on Saturday night! These players and coaches have worked hard to achieve this recognition, and we could not be more proud of them!

Next, we wanted all Flora families to know that we were made aware on Sunday evening of an individual associated with our football team who tested positive for COVID-19. This individual began feeling ill on Sunday, was tested, received a positive test, and notified school officials immediately. AC Flora administration and athletic personnel have conducted a thorough analysis of the team functions prior to the individual testing positive. We have notified specific individuals who we can definitively identify as being a close contact of this individual. In consideration of the amount of time team personnel were together, the fluidity of movement and interactions throughout the days prior to the positive test, and the desire to act in an abundance of caution, we have also asked all members of the football program to quarantine for fourteen days. We believe that there is a significant possibility that many members of our program were not in close contact with the infected individual. However, given the aforementioned factors, we feel that this decision is warranted and is in the best interest of all members of the AC Flora community.

We also realize that many fans, students, and community members attended the State Championship game on Saturday. We want to be absolutely clear that all known close contacts of this individual have been notified. We do not believe that there is any further risk associated with this individual at this time for anyone who attended the game. We simply wanted to share this information with the Flora community in an abundance of caution and with full transparency in these complicated and unique times.

With these developments in mind, and with the COVID-19 numbers in our community and state increasing, we have also provided some valuable guidance and information from Nurse Horne. This includes information on if/when you should contact the Nurse, who should quarantine, and information about testing options, sites, and procedures. Anyone with any questions about the health of their child should contact Nurse Catherine Horne at catherine.horne@richlandone.org. She is happy to answer questions and provide any assistance that you need. Please also read over our previously-shared COVID-19 Daily Self Screening Tool that we ask all families to utilize each day.

The health and safety of our students and staff continues to be our top priority, and we want everyone on campus to feel comfortable, safe, and healthy. If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Thanks and Go Falcons!
