Richland One Offering Bonuses, Other Incentives to Applicants for Classified and Certified Positions
Just as a shortage of certified teachers locally and throughout the nation is a familiar reality, so is the need for employees to fill vacant classified positions, or those that do not require a teaching certificate. Richland One is working to address both by enhancing its incentive packages.
Newly-hired certified math, science, special education and foreign language teachers can receive a $1,000 signing bonus if they hold a valid South Carolina teaching certificate or if they are eligible for one and they sign a contract early. A $3,000 student-teacher stipend is offered to new hires who sign to work in the district for two years. Classified employees who decide to enter the teaching profession receive their regular salary while completing student-teaching requirements. The district also offers reimbursement for moving expenses for out-of-state applicants.
The district’s Student Transportation Services department needs more bus drivers. The starting pay for Richland One bus drivers is $16.08 per hour. Applicants must be at least 21 years old, have a high school diploma (or GED) and pass rigorous South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) background checks.
Newly-announced incentives for bus drivers include sign-on bonuses, performance bonuses and longevity retention incentives:
- Sign-on Bonuses: New bus drivers with no experience can earn up to $1,500. New bus drivers with experience and a commercial driver’s license (CDL) can earn up to $2,250. New bus drivers with additional credentials can earn up to $3,000. The district also offers paid CDL training.
- Performance Bonuses: Bus drivers with perfect attendance and no at-fault accidents can earn $100 per month for up to $1,000 per year.
- Longevity Retention Incentives: Bus drivers with 0-3 years of experience will receive $500 annually; $750 for 4-7 years of experience; $1,000 for 8-10 years of experience; $1,250 for 11-15 years of experience; $1,500 for 16-20 years of experience; and bus drivers with 20-plus years of experience will receive $2,000.
Regina Johnson, who has been a bus driver in Richland One for 24 years, said she and her co-workers are doing their part to address the shortage by encouraging people they know to become bus drivers. Any district staff member who refers someone who is hired as a bus driver and becomes CDL-qualified receives a $300 bonus.
“We’d love to have you to come and join our team and if you know someone who is interested and wants to become a driver, let them know,” said Johnson.
Nutrition Services needs food service operators (starting pay $11.99/hour); cashiers (starting pay $13.21/hour); and truck drivers (starting pay $12.58/hour). Part-time and full-time positions are available. Qualified truck drivers without a CDL can receive a $500 signing bonus.
Building Services needs custodial and maintenance workers, including landscapers, electricians, heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) mechanics, painters and plumbers. Starting salaries range from $24,157-$36,235. Custodial workers could earn a $1,000 signing bonus and up to $1,000 for those willing to work non-traditional shifts.
The district is also hiring instructional assistants, nurses and social workers. Instructional assistants are required to complete 60 college credit hours or receive a satisfactory score on the paraprofessional examination. Social workers are required to hold a master’s degree and be licensed. Other vacancies exist in the areas of administrative/clerical, technology support and finance.
Professional learning opportunities abound in each of these areas and benefits for many of them include tuition reimbursement, retirement and health benefits, and paid sick leave. Some positions offer paid summer-off contract options.
