Richland One to hire 85 new teachers: District Offers Bonuses, Benefits, Training

Hopkins native and Lower Richland High School graduate (‘14) Ernest Hemingway had no idea he would return to Richland One as band director when he graduated from Florida A&M University three years ago. Besides, he was interning in Tallahassee in a position he was enjoying, but he welcomed a return to the district – his familiar place.
“I could create my own new outlook on the profession and the people were comforting and welcoming,” he said.
Richland One has nearly 2,000 teachers and is working to fill 85 certified teacher vacancies, primarily in the subject areas of math and science, as well as special education. Those positions come with a $1,000 signing bonus.
Qualified applicants also can expect competitive salaries, South Carolina retirement and health and dental coverage, as well as an opportunity to qualify for college tuition reimbursement.
For candidates who aren’t certified, Richland One has partnered with the University of South Carolina (UofSC) in their effort to provide an alternative pathway to teacher certification through their Carolina CAP Program. This partnership allows Richland One to recommend bachelor’s degree-holding teacher candidates to participate in a non-degree program leading to full licensure.
More than that, the district’s culture is nurturing and encourages teachers to grow, said Hemingway.
“The people work hard to ensure you’re involved and your voice actually matters,” he said. “I’m fortunate to be able to come to school and be engaged in my passion all day – music.”
