Dreher High School senior Leon Wang is something of a “Renaissance man.” This National Merit Scholar, who will be attending the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) this fall, was recently named Subway Male Student-Athlete of the Year by the South Carolina High School League.
As Subway’s Student-Athlete of the Year, Leon will receive a $2,500 scholarship, which is awarded to a senior who displays excellence in academics, athletics and community service.
“I cannot say enough about Leon,” said Dreher Head Wrestling Coach Jason Sandifer. “He is a prime example of a leader on and off the mat. His presence in all aspects of our school and community go above and beyond any expectation a coach could have. Leon has left has a huge mark in our program and his future is very bright!”
Leon participates in cross country and wrestling. In wrestling, he is a four-year starter at Dreher with two years as team captain, two-time district and region champion, state qualifier and a member of the North/South All-Star Team.
Leon’s service to his school and community includes tutoring high school and college students. He is also founder and captain of the Chemistry Club, captain of the math team and a member of the marching band.
Academically, Leon has a 5.507 GPA, is ranked first in his class, scored 1550 on the SAT and he is an AP Scholar, a Presidential Scholar candidate and four-time state champion in the U.S. Chemistry Olympiad. Leon plans to study engineering and physics at MIT.
