New Richland One Culinary Arts Wing Wins State Design Award, Its Second Award This Fall

The new culinary arts wing recently added to Heyward Career and Technology Center has won its second design award. The SC Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) recognized the facility’s design for its excellence and creativity. This state honors follows an award presented to the Richland One facility by the Columbia chapter of the AIA in November.

The impressive facility, which includes a culinary arts classroom, kitchen, lab, serving station, walk-in freezer and courtyard, provides state-of-the-art equipment rivaling that of professional restaurants and food service venues.

“We are proud and honored to receive yet another design award for this facility which will prepare students for a variety of careers in the hospitality and tourism industry,” said Heyward Principal Dr. Sherry Rivers. “Under the leadership of culinary arts teacher Chef Dwaine Collier, each component of our new culinary arts wing was designed with students in mind.”

In the new culinary arts wing, students will learn all aspects of hosting an event from planning the menu to serving the customers. The culinary kitchen provides three different workstations that include specialized equipment which will improve the quality of instruction for students.
