Lower Richland’s STEM Program Among First in Nation to be Recertified by Cognia  

 

Lower Richland High School’s STEM program has been recertified for the next five years, making it the third school in the nation to receive Cognia recertification.

 

Trevor Ivey, lead evaluator on the Cognia certification review team, praised Lower Richland Principal Dr. Ericka Hursey and her staff for the school’s hard work and dedication.

 

“Lower Richland High School is one of the first high schools in the nation to go through a rigorous internal and external review process to maintain the prestigious Cognia STEM certification they first earned in the 2014-15 school year. Interviews with five stakeholder groups, an evidence portfolio, student exhibitions and demonstrations, and short classroom observations provided a platform for the school to share its story, mission, and model in being committed to a process of continual improvement with its STEM Magnet Program.”

 

Dr. Hursey credits her faculty and staff with providing meaningful STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) teaching and learning experiences that will equip Lower Richland students with the knowledge and skills to take on leadership challenges of the 21st century.

 

“We continue to develop courageous risk takers, problem solvers and reflective thinkers at Lower Richland,” said Hursey. “We are committed to equipping our students with the necessary skills to prepare them for life after high school, in college, the military or the workforce. We take pride in providing our students with not just a solid academic foundation, but also experiences outside of the classroom that connect their learning. As an authorized STEM/STEAM and IB (International Baccalaureate) school, this confirms that we are on the trajectory to greatness.”

 

Cognia is a nonprofit organization which offers accreditation and certification assessments for schools nationally and internationally.
