Dreher Drama Students Win State Theatrical Awards, Qualify for National Competition
Dreher High School drama students earned superior ratings, won scholarships and qualified for national competitions based on their outstanding performances at the 2020 High School Festival sponsored by the Palmetto Dramatic Association and the South Carolina International Thespians in February.
Several students won “superior” ratings in individual categories which qualified them for the national competition, including Janis Nordeen, Zoe Barber and Mel Driggers in costume design; Ellie Thomson, Willie Allen and Zuzu Maltarich in solo musical; Sydney Largent and Demarcus Williams in duet musical; Amelia Lacy and Lindsay Steele in duet scene; Liam Judge and Walker Weaver in short film and Anna Swearingen in monologues.
Students Willie Allen, Maddie Voelkel, Leah Hug and Ellie Thomson each won a $500 scholarship for excellence in theatre. Emma Owens was named a state thespian officer and will serve on the South Carolina Student Thespian Board for the 2020-2021 school year.
In addition to individual student awards, Dreher’s production of the play Student Body, won the Chapter Select competition, an honor given to only one school in the state. As the Chapter Select winner, Dreher will represent South Carolina at the International Thespian Festival in June at Indiana University. Students Willie Allen, Jeb Bartlett, Demarcus Williams, and Je'Taime Goldwire each received special awards for their acting in Student Body.
In all, 41 Dreher drama students competed in the statewide competition. The Palmetto Dramatic Association and South Carolina International Thespians work together to create an annual high school theatre festival that encourages the development of quality theatre in secondary schools. The festival includes individual competitions, workshops, performances of original one-act plays and a playwriting competition that allow high school students an opportunity to showcase their talents and learn theatrical skills.
