Richland One Adding French to Language Immersion Program Next Year

Richland One parents interested in their children receiving a bilingual education now have a third option from which to choose. In the fall, the district’s language immersion magnet program will expand to include French in addition to its current offerings of Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.

Since the French immersion class will be new for the 2020-2021 school year, it only will be available to five-year-old kindergarten students. Spanish and Mandarin Chinese will be offered to students in four-year-old kindergarten (4K) through fourth grade.

The online application period for language immersion and the district’s 11 other unique magnet programs will be open through January 31, 2020. Parents are encouraged to get their applications in as soon as possible.

The district’s language immersion program, which began in 2016, is based at Carver-Lyon Elementary School, but it is open to students throughout Richland One. Bus transportation is provided. In the language immersion program, about half of the students’ instructional time will be taught in English and the other half will be taught in either Mandarin Chinese, Spanish or French.

Dr. Teresa Turner, director of Richland One’s Magnet Schools Assistance Program, says speaking two languages has become second nature to students in the program.

“Being bilingual has long-term advantages because it can make students more marketable and give them a competitive edge in college and the workplace,” she said. “The number of job offers requiring a command of at least two languages more than doubled in the United States between 2010 and 2015, and French is now the third most sought-after foreign language among U.S. employers.”
