Richland One Celebrates Career and Technology Education Month
Richland One’s CATE (career and technology education) programs offer students real-world job skills and opportunities that lead to high earning potential, state and national industry certifications, college credit, industry internships and the knowledge to start their own businesses while in high school. The community is invited to join Heyward Career and Technology Center as it celebrates February as National CATE Month with a fierce, but delicious, chili cook-off and fun classroom demonstrations.
- February 1 – National Job Shadowing Day: students will do onsite and virtual shadowing of various professions
- February 5 –Chili Cook-Off: at 6 p.m. bus drivers will team up with students to compete for bragging rights in this annual competition at Heyward Career and Technology Center, 3560 Lynhaven Drive. Chili samples are only $1.
- February 13 – Family and Friends’ Day at Heyward Career and Technology Center: 9 - 10:30 a.m. and 1 - 2:30 p.m. the community is invited to tour the campus, view classroom demonstrations, and participate in class projects
- February 27 – Family and Friends’ Day at Heyward Career and Technology Center: 9 - 10:30 a.m. and 1 - 2:30 p.m. the community is invited to tour the campus, view classroom demonstrations, and participate in class projects
Dr. Sherry Rivers, principal of Heyward Career and Technology Center, continues to add new CATE programs like mechatronics (a combination of mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering) that will prepare students for high-paying, in-demand jobs.
“We’re talking about earning potential,” said Dr. Rivers. “That’s the bottom line for students and parents. There is a big difference between the earning potential of students taking CATE and those that don’t. With CATE training, there is a world of opportunity open to them. It’s available to anyone with the motivation to go further and improve their skill set. Some have the mindset that CATE is just for students not going to college, but we have opportunities for all levels of students whether they choose to go to college, the military or into the workforce.”
