Satchel Ford Elementary Student Ranks Top Five in InvestWrite National Essay Contest
Satchel Ford Elementary School fifth-grade student Bailey Bostic wrote her way to the top five in the Spring 2024 InvestWrite national essay contest.
The essay contest, organized by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) Foundation, is open to schools that participate in the foundation’s Stock Market Game. In the essay, students answer a question about long-term saving and investing that is meant to address real-world financial issues and situations.
Bailey placed first in the state elementary division and fifth in the national elementary division.
“I’m super excited and so happy,” she said. “I think what I’m learning about investing is really going to help me a lot because I don’t really need to look up things. I already know how to do it.”
Bailey’s prizes included a banner and a $100 American Express gift card. She says she plans to use the money from the gift card to open an investment account with Acorn and buy real stocks with the help of her dad.
Satchel Ford library assistant Stephen Bidwell organized the school’s stock market club last school year. He says Bailey, who is a member of the club, was very interested in competing in the essay contest.
“I’m really glad that Bailey was able to put something together that people thought highly of. I was thrilled when I found out she got these recognitions,” said Bidwell.
