Hopkins Elementary Named Visible Learning+ Certified School

Hopkins Elementary School has been named a Visible Learning+ Certified School, becoming the first Richland One school and the first school in South Carolina to earn that distinction.

Visible Learning+, which is part of a partnership between book publishing company Corwin and Australian professor John Hattie, is a professional learning program that explores what methods work best to improve student achievement. The goal of this program is to help students take responsibility for their learning and give teachers clarity about what they are teaching.

Visible Learning+ School Awards recognize the progress and achievements schools make in implementing the program and embedding its methods in all levels. There are three awards a school can obtain: Associate School, Partner School and Certified School. Being named a Visible Learning+ Certified School is the highest award a school can obtain.

Eligibility for each of the three awards includes an assessment process, evidence of impact requirements and required performance standards. In addition, each school is assessed on the extent to which the Visible Learning+ mindframes are present; whereby leaders, teachers and students are evaluators of their own impact. The award is valid for two years, and schools must reapply to maintain their award status.

“I’m incredibly proud of our teachers and our students for taking ownership of their learning. This award is a testament to the work that they put in. The students really work hard and, as a result of this work, they really having an understanding of what success looks like. I believe if we stay on this path of growing, learning and being transparent with our students, we’ll see even greater success,” said Hopkins Elementary Principal Audrey White-Garner.

Hopkins Elementary will be recognized during the annual Visible Learning+ Conference in San Diego, California in July.
