Richland One MSAP Grant Project Director Accepted Into AASA Urban Superintendents Academy

Dr. Teresa Turner, Richland One’s Magnet Schools Assistance Program (MSAP) project director, has been accepted into AASA, The School Superintendents Association’s, Urban Superintendents Academy.

Dr. Turner will participate in the academy’s Howard University cohort. The blended learning program allows participants to meet virtually and in person on a monthly basis.

Through this academy, I will have the opportunity to work with other aspiring superintendents as we learn how to best address critical problems and issues facing all urban superintendents today. Richland One Superintendent Dr. Craig Witherspoon has been a great mentor and leader. This program just adds to my leadership toolkit. I know the lessons learned will positively impact my work in Richland One and beyond, said Dr. Turner.

The Urban Superintendents Academy is designed for those “who want to take on leadership roles in our nation’s rapidly-growing urban areas, help accelerate academic performance growth, and be a champion for historically underrepresented and diverse populations.”

The academy’s goal is to prepare superintendents and those who aspire to be superintendents for the demands of the urban environment. According to AASA, less than 10 percent of superintendents in the U.S. are persons of color.

There are two cohorts the academy offers: Howard University and the University of Southern California’s Rossier School of Education.

The specific goals for both programs are:

  • Prepare for and successfully acquire a position as an urban superintendent.
  • Delineate and apply key skills of 21st century leadership.
  • Address critical problems and issues facing all urban superintendents today in a strategic and creative way.
  • Deal effectively and creatively with community relations and politics in the urban setting.
  • Use a range of 21st century facilitative skills to deal with organizational politics and relationship building in the urban school system.
  • Become a strategic leader who consistently demonstrates critical reasoning, problem solving and creativity.
  • Learn how to effectively work with the board of education.
