Richland One Inducts Five New Members into Hall of Fame

Richland One honored the five newest members of the district’s Hall of Fame during the 2022 Richland One Hall of Fame Induction Gala, which was held September 17 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.

The Richland One Hall of Fame was established in 2004 to recognize graduates of Richland One schools and other persons throughout the district’s history who have made significant contributions to Richland One, their communities, their professions and society as a whole. Induction into the Hall of Fame is the highest honor bestowed upon individuals by the Richland One Board of School Commissioners.

The five members of the 2021 Hall of Fame induction class who were honored during this year’s gala were:

  • Kay Spann Byrd, a 1971 graduate of C.A. Johnson High School whose work led to the creation of the first South Carolina park (The Star of Hope) built and dedicated in honor of persons affected by mental illness;

  • Dr. Tanya C. Dillihay, a 1975 graduate of Lower Richland High School who retired as medical director of the Division of Inpatient Services at the South Carolina Department of Mental Health;

  • Alex English, a 1972 graduate of Dreher High School and a retired NBA player who is considered to be the league’s most prolific scorer of the 1980s;

  • Dr. Deborah D. Hazzard, a 1986 graduate of Lower Richland High School who is the first African-American in a leadership role (associate dean) in the 100+-year history of the University of South Carolina’s School of Business; and

  • Henry C. Young, Sr., a retired Richland One educator who worked in Richland One for 32 years as a teacher, coach and administrator, and is best known for his 12-year tenure as principal of C.A. Johnson High School.

Along with inducting the newest Hall of Fame members, the district also recognizes outstanding current Richland One students who may be inducted into the Hall of Fame themselves one day. Those students are called “Legends in the Making.”

The eight Legends in the Making, one from each high school, who were honored during the gala were:

  • Yanae Williams, a freshman at Columbia High School

  • Ana Maria Creed, a senior at Dreher High School

  • Shakari Shanell Jones, a senior at Eau Claire High School

  • Hank Overbay, a senior at A.C. Flora High School

  • Keionna Bates, a senior at C.A. Johnson High School

  • Armon Williams, a senior at W.J. Keenan High School

  • Katlyn Elizabeth Byrd, a senior at Lower Richland High School

  • Sam McConnell, a senior at the Richland One Middle College

Musical entertainment during the gala was provided by national and international recording artist CammWess, who is a 2015 graduate of Dreher High School. CammWess was accompanied by Saxophonist Dante Lewis’ Band; Lewis is a 1999 graduate of Eau Claire High School. Intisar Faulkner, co-anchor of WIS Sunrise on WIS-TV, served as the mistress of ceremonies.

Richland One extends its appreciation to the following sponsors for helping to make the gala possible: Schneider Electric, Platinum Sponsor; First Citizens Bank, Solomon’s Temple and WIS-TV, Gold Sponsors; Duff Freeman Lyon, LLC, Prisma Health and Richardson, Plowden & Robinson, PA, Silver Sponsors.
