Richland One Still in Need of Drivers and Building Maintenance Staff; Offering Bonuses, Other Incentives

Richland One’s Student Transportation Services, Nutrition Services and Building Services departments are making a concerted effort to fill vacancies over the summer, with bonuses and incentive packages still in place.

The greatest need in Nutrition Services is for truck drivers with or without a commercial driver’s license (CDL). The starting pay for truck drivers has increased from $12.58 per hour to $15.29 per hour. Part-time and full-time positions are available and qualified applicants can receive up to a $1,000 signing bonus.

The district’s Student Transportation Services department needs more bus drivers. The starting pay for Richland One bus drivers is $16.08 per hour. Applicants must be at least 21 years old, have a high school diploma (or GED) and pass South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) background checks.  

“We are down 55 bus drivers and six bus aides due to retirements and employees not returning,” said Dennis Jones, safety and training manager in Student Transportation Services.

Packages for qualified bus driver applicants include signing bonuses, performance bonuses and longevity retention incentives:

  • Signing Bonuses: New bus drivers with no experience can earn up to $1,500. New bus drivers with experience and a CDL can earn up to $2,250. New bus drivers with additional credentials can earn up to $3,000. The district also offers paid CDL training.
  • Performance Bonuses: Bus drivers with perfect attendance and no at-fault accidents can earn $100 per month for up to $1,000 per year.
  • Longevity Retention Incentives: Bus drivers with 0-3 years of experience will receive $500 annually; $750 for 4-7 years of experience; $1,000 for 8-10 years of experience; $1,250 for 11-15 years of experience; $1,500 for 16-20 years of experience; and bus drivers with 20-plus years of experience will receive $2,000.

Building Services needs custodial and maintenance workers, including landscapers, electricians, heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) mechanics, painters and plumbers. Starting salaries range from $24,157-$36,235. Custodial workers could earn a $1,000 signing bonus and up to $1,000 for those willing to work non-traditional shifts.

Any certified or classified district employee who refers someone who is hired as a bus driver and becomes CDL-qualified receives $500. 

Professional learning opportunities abound in each of these areas and benefits for many of them include tuition reimbursement, retirement and health benefits, and paid sick leave.
