Richland One’s Track Students Win 14 Individual and Relay Team State Championships

Individual track team members and relay teams from Richland One outpaced their competitors and brought home 14 state championship titles from the 2022 South Carolina High School League Track and Field Championships, held May 19-21.

Along with the state championship wins, Richland One student-athletes representing all of the district’s high school track teams also finished as runners-up in several events as follows:

  • Class A

(C.A. Johnson High School Boys Track Team – Head Coach Wayne Johnson) Devron Davis – state champion, 100 meters; Travon Riley – runner-up, 400 meters; Brian McIntire – runner-up, 800 meters; Jaevon Riley – state champion, 400-meter hurdles and high jump, and runner-up, 110-meter hurdles; Cecelius Bailey – runner-up, javelin; Brian McIntire, Jaevon Riley, Travon Riley and Jaylon Simpson – state champions, 4x400-meter relay        

  • Class 2A

(Columbia High School Girls Track Team – Head Coach Calvin Harrison) Timoni Porterfield – state champion, long jump; runner-up, 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash

(Eau Claire High School Girls Track Team – Head Coach Christopher Greene) TyQwasia Williams – state champion, 400-meter hurdles; Anyla Demas – runner-up, 400-meter hurdles; Jermyra Bethel, Shalaysia Pyos, Destinee Tiller and TyQwasia Williams – state champions, 4x400-meter relay      

  • Class 3A

(W.J. Keenan High School Boys Track Team – Head Coach Demond Logan) Jhyrique Mangum – runner-up, shot put; and Denard White – runner-up, 400-meter dash

(Lower Richland High School Boys Track Team – Head Coach Michael Steward) Matthew Butler – state champion, 400-meter dash; Lee Davis– state champion, shot put; Jurnii Lucas – state champion, 400-meter hurdles and runner-up, 110-meter hurdles; and Nathaniel Branch, Matthew Butler, Jordan Cochran, Jurnii Lucas, Carter Taylor and Ernest Wesley – runner-up, 4x400-meter relay

  • Class 4A

(A.C. Flora High School Boys Track Team – Head Coach David Worstall) John O’Cain – state champion, pole vault; and Micaiah Settles – state champion, discus

(Dreher High School Boys Track Team – Head Coach George Clark) David Epps – state champion, 110-meter hurdles; Sam Kolowith – state champion, 3200-meter run; and Caleb Timmons – runner-up, 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash

Additionally, C.A. Johnson’s boys track team finished in third place in Class A; Eau Claire’s girls track team placed fourth in Class 2A, and Columbia High’s girls track team placed eighth in Class 2A; Lower Richland’s boys track team placed third in Class 3A, and W.J. Keenan’s boys track team placed seventh in Class 3A; Dreher’s boys track team finished as the state runner-up in Class 4A, and A.C. Flora’s boys track team placed seventh in Class 4A.
