    National Honor Society Membership Requirements

    The purpose of this organization is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.  Membership in this local chapter of NHS is an honor bestowed upon a student.

    To be eligible for membership, you must meet the basic requirements of being a junior or senior and earning at least a 3.750 cumulative weighted GPA. In addition to the academic requirement, candidates must also show evidence of participation and leadership in the school and in the community.  All candidates who are interested in applying must fill out the attached application and mail in (1 Falcon Dr, Columbia, SC 29204) or drop off to AC Flora (Attention Lindsay Purdy).  The application must be filled in entirely and submitted on or before April 12, 2021. The selection of each member to the chapter shall be by a majority vote of the faculty council. Prior to notification of any candidates, the chapter adviser shall review with the principal the results of the faculty council’s deliberations.

    After students become members of the National Honor Society, you are reviewed periodically by the Faculty Council and must maintain the high standards of the NHS (see by laws) Active members are required to maintain a minimum scholastic average of 3.600, pay $5.00 in annual dues (covers cost of graduation tassel and diploma seal and annual NHS membership for the school) each year you are in the society, maintain a clear discipline record, and have regular virtual/in person attendance at monthly NHS meetings.  In order to maintain a clear discipline record you must maintain “good character.”  This includes on campus and off campus behavior.  If there are negative incidents that occur during your time in this society and it is documented in powerschool, the faculty committee will meet and determine if you are eligible to remain in the society.  This includes, but is not limited to, cheating, disruption of class, and refusal to obey a teacher.

    Failure to maintain good standing will result in probation and possible dismissal.  Meetings will be the second Monday of every month on Teams.  The NHS officers will conduct the meetings and review the agenda and answer any questions.  Attendance will be downloaded and recorded.  You are expected to maintain DIRECT contact with Mrs. Purdy via Microsoft Teams, Email or GroupMe.  Failure to maintain contact may result in probation and removal from the society.  If you maintain good standing you will receive a special NHS tassel for graduation and an NHS seal for your diploma.
