To our students, parents, and community:
Welcome to the Heyward Gibbes Middle School's Athletic page. My name is Coach Seymore and I will be your Athletic Coordinator for the 2022-2023 school year. I would like to welcome our students and parents back and look forward to having many of you participate in athletics this year, whether it is football, volleyball, cheerleading, basketball, wrestling, or track and field. I know this year will be an exciting year because we have a lot in store. If you click on each sport to the left, you will find our coaches' information. Most of our coaches have been coaching here for more than 2 years. All of our coaches are CPR, AED, and first aid trained and certified. Our coaches take pride in not just training our student athletes on athletic skills, but we focus on the whole student. Making sure that we train leaders inside and outside of the classroom. Our student athletes are students first, so academia is very important no matter what sport they choose to participate in. Our seventh and eighth grade students may participate in football, volleyball, cheerleading, basketball, wrestling, and track and field. Our sixth grade student athletes may only participate in track and field because the first year is academic driven when they first come to middle school. Sixth grade students must maintain a C average in their first semester in order to participate in track and field in the spring. We will also have athletic academic tutoring on Mondays through Thursdays from 4pm-6pm starting in the month of September. All student athletes must attend althletic tutorial (this is not an option). All student athletes must maintain a C average in order to participate in any sport. With the assistance of our school counselors, we will monitor a student's academic status. We will also monitor student athletes' behavior inside and outside the classroom. Students who continuously cause disruptions in class or in school in any form or fashion cannot represent us in athletics. Our sole responsibility as coaches is to ensure that every student who participates in athletics participates in a safe and encouraging environment. Student athletes need to make sure that they are wearing the proper attire during practice and to bring their own water bottles to practice. Student athletes will be asked to work hard and do their best and not give up. Keep in mind that each sport will have tryouts and coaches reserve the right, through due process, to choose the students that they feel will meet the needs of their team. We also want to invite our parents to be a part of that support, not just for our student athletes but for our athletic programs. If you would like to support the athletic department by helping out during games in our concession stands or other opportunities throughout the school year, please contact me. We look forward to working with you all this year. Let's have a great year!
Blessings,
Coach James Seymore
Ahtletic Coordinator
