    Substitutes are a critical member of the educational team in Richland County School District One. High-quality substitutes strive to ensure that continuity of classroom instruction and other educational services are provided to our 23,000 plus students when regular staff members are absent. Substitute teachers work in elementary, middle, and high schools as well as alternative school settings. Richland One also employs substitute nurses, substitute instructional/library assistants, substitute in-school suspension supervisors, substitute security monitors, and substitute secretaries.

    Minimum Qualifications


    Certified Substitute Teacher

    Requires possession of a S.C. teacher certification.


    Non-Certified Substitute Teacher

     Must be 21 years old with a high school diploma or its equivalent (ie., GED)

     If under the age of 21; it is required to have a minimum of 24 semester hours of earned college credit.



    Steps to becoming a Substitute Teacher in Richland County School District One


    1. A completed Richland School District One Online Application

    2. Submit Teacher's license or an official transcript for a GED, high school diploma or college degree to Richland School District One, Office of Human Resource Services, 1616 Richland Street, Columbia, SC 29201.

    3. Schedule to attend a Training & Orientation session (Approximately 4 to 5 hours) with Substitute Services by contacting the Substitute Supervisor, Alfredia Boyd at (803) 231-7425 or by email at alfredia.boyd@richlandone.org
