Richland One teacher, Jennifer Wise of Hand Middle School, was named South Carolina’s 2016-2017 Teacher of the Year. She is also one of 213 recipients nationwide of the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
Stephanie Johnson, second grade teacher at H.B. Rhame Elementary School, is one of 43 educators nationwide receiving the California Casualty Award for Teaching Excellence from the National Education Association (NEA).

This program recognizes and rewards the very best K-12 public and private school educators and employees who are making a difference in the lives of students by exemplifying excellence, positive influences and leadership.
Eight Richland One schools have been recognized as being among the healthiest schools in the nation. Brockman Elementary School is the first South Carolina school to receive the National Healthy Schools Gold Award. Bronze Award winners include Carver-Lyon Elementary, Columbia High, Dreher High, Edward E. Taylor Elementary, Gadsden Elementary, Horrell Hill Elementary and Pine Grove Elementary schools.
Seven Richland One high school seniors were named semifinalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. Semifinalists include A.C. Flora students River M. Price and Katlyn R. Williamson as well as Dreher students Isabel G. Cook, Kristofer L. Crabtree, Gregory J. Voelkel, Nicolas B. Webster and Rachel F. Weissman.
Stephanie Johnson, second grade teacher at H.B. Rhame Elementary School, participated in a national press briefing on October 13 on the details of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
Richland One’s Challenger Learning Center received two national awards from the Challenger Center for Space Science Education. Robyn Mance received the Shining Star Award which recognizes individuals who are dedicated to the betterment of the Challenger Center organization. The center was also recognized for increasing the number of simulated space missions flown during 2015-2016 by more than 10 percent.
W.A. Perry Middle School’s 21st Century After-School Program has been selected as a NASA STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) Site for the 2016-2017 school year. W.A. Perry is one of only 10 South Carolina schools to be selected by NASA.
C.A. Johnson High athletics department has received a $2,000 grant from the National Football League (NFL) Foundation. This grant will provide valuable resources to the school’s 45 football student-athletes. The grant was awarded as part of the “Super Bowl High School Honor Roll” program for high schools that have contributed to Super Bowl history by producing players or head coaches who have appeared in a Super Bowl.

The award is the highest recognition that a kindergarten through 12th grade mathematics or science teacher may receive.
Richland One student athletes from A.C. Flora High and Dreher High collectively won six state swimming championship titles at competitions held October 15. The girls’ swim team at A.C. Flora’s girls’ team is ranked fourth best in the state and Dreher’s girls’ team is ranked sixth. The boys swim teams also had impressive state rankings, with A.C. Flora placing seventh and Dreher placing 13th overall.
Richland One will induct six new members into the school district’s Hall of Fame in January. Induction into the Hall of Fame is the highest honor bestowed upon individuals by the Richland One Board of School Commissioners. The six members of the 2016 induction class are William B. “Bill” Dukes, Dr. Benjamin B. Dunlap, Don Frierson, Thomas Sinkler Martin, Craig Melvin and Dr. Ronald L. Rhames.
