Dreher High Quiz Bowl Team Wins State Academic Challenge; Qualifies for National Championship Tournament
Dreher High School’s quiz bowl team won first place in the lower high school division of the state academic challenge. The state competition was held March 7 at Lander University in Greenwood.
Dreher’s quiz bowl team earned the most points and wins in their division for the Midlands region, qualifying for the state competition.
The team has also qualified for the National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) High School National Championship, which will be held in May in Atlanta, Georgia.
The quiz bowl team started this school year. Six students are on the team, including freshman Asa Adler, who is a captain. He was captain of Hand Middle School’s quiz bowl team when it started last school year.
“I’m still a little bit surprised because I thought we’d do okay. The practices we did were less about knowing the trivia answers and more about practicing knowing how to buzz in. I think that since our team was very lucky in having this previous knowledge in all these subjects, we were able to do better,” Asa said.
Dreher social studies teacher Isabella Cox says she volunteered to be the quiz bowl team’s head coach because she loves trivia. She said she’s proud to have a state championship win under the team’s belt.
“The students are full of knowledge and facts. We wouldn’t have won if they hadn’t done their part and shared their wealth of knowledge,” said Cox.
