A.C. Flora’s Esports Team Wins Rocket League Championship in First Major In-Person Competition
A.C. Flora High School’s esports team won the Rocket League championship in the Lexington One Invitational, the first major in-person esports event that Richland One’s new esports teams have competed in.
Six Richland One high school schools competed in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Rocket League during the Lexington One Invitational, which was held March 21.
Bobby Gunshefski, the head coach of A.C. Flora’s esports team, says the chemistry among the three students who are on the Rocket League team helped them win the championship.
“It’s been really cool to see them realize ‘Hey, we’re really good at this. Let’s keep working and see if we can win’ and then having it come to fruition is really awesome,” he said.
Richland One’s competitive esports program launched in February 2025 at all of the district’s high schools.
“My whole goal with the esports program is that, first and foremost, I want these students to have a community at their schools where they can come and have fun and make friends. In addition to those things, we have a team that came in and dominated this tournament. That’s an added bonus in my opinion. I’m really proud of these students,” said Madalyn Hazlett, Richland One’s esports coordinator.
Playoffs for all of Richland One’s esports teams will begin next week.
