Lower Richland High Partners with South Carolina Energy Justice Coalition for Mural Initiative

Lower Richland High School is partnering with the South Carolina Energy Justice Coalition for a special mural initiative, as part of the school’s celebration of its 100th anniversary this school year.

The project includes a large-scale climate-smart mural using thermal-regulating paint, which has the ability to reduce ambient temperatures by up to 20 degrees compared to surrounding surfaces.

The initiative will also include a cooling-temperature walkway and outdoor classroom renovation designed to create a more comfortable, functional outdoor learning and gathering space.

The South Carolina Energy Justice Coalition celebrated the initiative during its inaugural Energy Justice Day celebration at Sowing Seeds into the Midlands’ headquarters in Columbia September 24.

“We’re excited that Lower Richland High School was chosen to be part of the Energy Justice Day celebration. Adding a mural and outdoor classroom is a great way to honor our 100th anniversary,” said Lower Richland High principal Latayna Williams. “We’ve added Environmental Systems to our class offerings and have nearly 50 students in our Conservation Club—this initiative fits perfectly with our focus on environmental learning and community.”

The project is expected to be completed in November.
