City of Columbia Honors Richland One Students and Schools During 38th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration

Richland One students and schools were honored during the City of Columbia’s 38th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on January 19.

Crayton Middle School seventh-grade student George Martin, Jr. served as the master of ceremonies for the event.

Twelve students received Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dream Keeper Scholarship Awards. The awards recognize students who show “exemplary displays of committed service to the tenets of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”  The scholarship awards program was only open to Richland One students.

The following Richland One students received Dream Keeper scholarship awards:

Elementary School

  • First Place ($100): Calvin Hastie (Brockman Elementary School)
  • Second Place ($75): Melani Hernandez Martinez (A.J. Lewis Greenview Elementary School)
  • Third Place ($50): Makenze E. Tilley (Meadowfield Elementary School)
  • Honorable Mention ($25): Trista Jones (Hopkins Elementary School)
     

Middle School

  • First Place ($250): Natalie Maurice (W.G. Sanders Middle School)
  • Second Place ($175): Layloni Randle (Southeast Middle School)
  • Third Place ($100): Alana Wilkerson (Hand Middle School)
  • Honorable Mention ($75): Bryce McKellar (Crayton Middle School)
     

High School

  • First Place ($1,000): A’Keyah Chisolm (Eau Claire High School)
  • Second Place ($500): Halayna Sumter (Richland One Middle College)
  • Third Place ($250): Siya Bakshi (Dreher High School)
  • Honorable Mention ($100): Jennylis Sanchez-Martinez (C.A. Johnson High School)
     

Three Richland One schools were recognized for collecting the most canned goods as part of the city’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Honor the Dream Food Drive, which honors Dr. King’s legacy of community service. This year, 2,847 pounds of food were donated to Harvest Hope Food Bank, which is the equivalent of 2,031 meals for people in the community.

The following Richland One schools donated the most canned goods in their respective categories:

  • Elementary School: Caughman Road Elementary School (383 pounds)
  • Middle School: Hand Middle School (909 pounds)
  • High School: Lower Richland High School (54 pounds)
