Richland One Superintendent’s Book Club Challenge Among District’s Read Across America Celebrations
To become Superintendent’s Book Club members, students must read either 100 picture books or eight chapter books between March 2 and May 6. Book Club members will be invited to a special reading celebration, and there will be recognition and prizes for the school, class and students who read the most books. Also, if students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade collectively read 250,000 books, they will be allowed to duct tape Dr. Witherspoon to a wall.
“We are excited to see how many of our students accept the challenge designed to expand their appetites for reading,” said Dr. Witherspoon. “Reading and comprehension form the foundation for every other area of learning, so we welcome the opportunity this celebration presents.”
The Read Across America program was created by the National Education Association to encourage and foster a lifelong love of reading in students. This year’s theme is, “Celebrating a Nation of Diverse Readers.”
Richland One schools will hold various events in celebration of Read Across America Week, including read-alouds, book giveaways and storybook character parades and dress-alikes. Schools are also asked to join in the Superintendent’s Book Club challenge, tracking their progress through May 6.
