Who Must Complete the Shared Housing Process?
Families living with another family, relative, friend, etc, one or more of the following applies:
- Parent/Guardian is not contracted/recognized as the tenant or owner of the residence
- Parent/Guardian is not contracted for utility services being provided for the residence
A student who has reached the age of majority (18 years old,) or has been emancipated, and wants to enroll themselves in school while living with someone, one or more of the following apply:
- Student is not contracted/recognized as the tenant or owner of the residence
- Student is not contracted for utility services being provided for the residence
NOTE: all parts of this process that state "parent/guardian" will also apply to the adult student or emancipated minor seeking to enroll.
What is the Shared Housing Process?
The parent/guardian and the person (homeowner/lessee) they reside with must complete the Shared Housing Residency Affidavit and provide documentation to prove residency.
What is the Shared Housing Residency Affidavit?
The Shared Housing Residency Affidavit is a document completed by the contractually reliable party (homeowner/lessee) of the residence and the parent/guardian of the student. By completing this document, the homeowner/lessee and the parent/guardian are attesting to them both residing in the same home. The affidavit must also be signed in front of a Notary before being submitted to any school.
Each page should be completed by the following person:
- Page 1: Parent/guardian
- Page 2: Homeowner/Lessee
- Page 3: Parent/guardian
- Page 4: Parent/guardian AND Homeowner/Lessee

Where do I go to Have My Affidavit Notarized?
For your convenience, affidavits can be notarized by any public notary with an UNEXPIRED commission. If your student's school has a notary, you may go directly to the school to complete the Shared Housing proofs of residence process. The district registrar's office can also provide a notary for school documents.
What Documentation Must be Provided as Proof of Residency when Completing the Shared Housing Process?
The homeowner/lessee must provide:
- Complete, signed, unexpired copy of lease agreement, mortgage statement dated within the last 30 days, or settlement statement (if closed on the home in the last 30 days)
- Utility bill statement dated within the last 30 days
The parent must provide:
- Two correspondences mailed to the parent at the residential address and dated within the last 30 days. We accept:
- Paycheck stub
- State/Federal Supported Services
- DSS
- SCDMV mail (not driver’s license)
- SC Dept. of Employment & Workforce
- Social Security Administration
- SC Student Loan
- SC Child Support Enforcement Division
- Car insurance
- Bank statement
- Cell phone bill
- Medical bill
Parent/guardians may also be required to provide proof that they are no longer residing at their previous address. This proof can be in the form of a letter from the previous landlord (on letterhead), a cancellation of service notice, or a notarized statement.
BE ADVISED: Schools have the right to require additional documents to be provided to satisfy proof of residency and may utilize all reasonable and appropriate means they have at their disposal to verify residential addresses and confirm that the declaration of facts provided in the affidavit is true and accurate.
What if I Cannot Provide Proof of Residency Documents?
If the parent/guardian and/or homeowner/lessee moved into their residence less than 30 days prior to enrolling a student, they will be given up to 30 days from the move-in date to provide their respective proof of residency.
If the parent/guardian moved into their residence more than 30 days prior to enrolling a student, the enrollment may be delayed until proof of residency can be verified. For returning students, class scheduling may be delayed until proof of residency can be verified.
BE ADVISED: Schools reserve the right to request proof of residence as frequently as every 9 weeks/quarterly.
Who Manages the Shared Housing Process?
The Shared Housing process is handled by the school's registrar. Schools may have established a time when they will begin receiving Shared Housing Proof of Residence documentation. Parents should contact their zoned school(s) to determine the best time(s) to complete the process.
