SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Military Families,

Welcome to Richland County School District One! We are proud and excited to have you join the Richland One family.

dr.wither

Our district spans over 480 square miles and encompasses urban, suburban and rural communities. We serve over 21,000 students in 52 schools and centers, and we have an outstanding team of over 4,000 employees. We are the 10th-largest school district in South Carolina.

In Richland One, our mission is to transform lives through education and empower all of our students to achieve their potential and dreams. We offer many different programs to meet the needs and interests of our students as we prepare them to be college- and career-ready, including Montessori programs, a language immersion program, career and technical education programs, visual and performing arts programs, as well as International Baccalaureate and other advanced academic programs.

Our many Points of Pride include our highest-ever graduation rate (86 percent); having the first pre-apprenticeship program in South Carolina; and having the first high school commercial driver’s license (CDL) training program in South Carolina and one of only six in the nation. Richland One is also home to South Carolina’s only Challenger Learning Center for space science education. Our many distinguished alumni include C.A. Johnson High School graduate Maj. General (Ret.) Charles F. Bolden, Jr., a former astronaut and former NASA administrator, and Craig Melvin, a Columbia High School graduate who is a co-anchor of NBC’s Today show.

Richland One is proud to have been designated by the South Carolina Department of Education as a Purple Star School District, which reflects our significant commitment to have programs and resources in place to support military-connected students and their families.

We recognize the unique needs and challenges that military families face, including transitioning to new communities and new schools due to military transfers. Please be assured that we have a comprehensive support system in place to provide you with any assistance that you may need. Feel free to contact our military community liaison, Dr. Traci Cooper, at (803) 231-7144 or traci.cooper@richlandone.org.

Again, welcome to Richland One … We are Richland One Strong!

Sincerely,

Craig Witherspoon, Ed.D.
