Elementary AAP Young Einstein Summer Institute
“Expanding the Minds of Young Scholars”
Description
The Young Einstein Summer Institute is a five-week program for 1st-3rd grade students. This “invitation only” program is designed to provide a high quality educational and social opportunity for students who possess great academic potential. There is no cost to attend this institute.
During the institute, students will participate in problem-based learning and critical thinking activities each day in addition to numerous enrichment programs. Programs include but are not limited to robotics, STEM club, public speaking, and genius hour. Students will be assessed to determine their progress toward meeting the academic qualifications for placement in an Advanced Academic Program in Richland School District One.
Goal
The goal of the Young Einstein Summer Institute is to provide opportunities for students to receive instruction intended to promote problem-solving, critical thinking, collaboration, and enhance communication.
Objectives
Enhance communication and rigorous thinking;
- Strengthen test taking strategies;
- Participate in enrichment activities based upon interests;
- Provide STEM based field experiences to solidify learning; and
- Increase problem-solving skills.
Qualifications
Students are invited to apply to the Young Einstein Summer Institute if they meet the following criteria:
1st Grade
- Scoring at/or above the 75th percentile on the Winter STAR Reading or STAR Math Assessment
2nd Grade
- Scoring at/or above the 75th percentile on the Winter STAR Reading or STAR Math Assessment
- Met one dimension of South Carolina’s Gifted and Talented Requirement
3rd Grade
- Currently being served in the AAP Program
- Not demonstrating high proficiency and high growth on the STAR Reading and/or STAR Math Assessment
- Met one dimension of South Carolina’s Gifted and Talented Requirement.
