Overview
Richland One's commitment to the teaching and learning of social studies in all grades begins with a focus on promoting civic competence. According to the National Council for Social Studies, the primary purpose of social studies is to help young people make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world. The teaching of social studies in Richland One supports student learning with world-class skills and life and career characteristics through creative and innovative units of study. The Richland One Social Studies Framework includes four phases: prior knowledge, guided lesson, application of process skills, and assessment and closure.
