Transfer Requests FAQs
-
Can I have my child attend a school that we are not zoned for based on my preference?
No, parents are not able to choose a school based on preference. Students must attend the zoned school unless the circumstances of the parent and/or student qualify for a transfer.
-
When can I apply for a transfer?
Transfer season starts on March 1 of every year and the deadline to submit an application is May 1st. If Either day falls on a weekend day, the start and deadline date will be adjusted to the respective weekday as to not decrease the alloted time to apply.
Applications submitted after the deadline will not be accepted unless a qualifying reason applies. Respective qualifying reasons are as follows:
- Childcare: The family is new to the district, the parents/legal guardians have had a recent change of employment, Changes with the childcare provider have affected the student’s afterschool care, or the student has recently been placed with the family
- Employee Option: The employee is a new hire with the school district, the employee has had a recent change of employment with the school district, the student has recently been placed in the care of the employee via foster care, court order, or other legal paperwork
- Remainer of the Year: this request can only be submitted after the student's 45th instructional day of school during the current school term.
An application for the following transfers may be considered at any time with a qualifying circumstance:
- Administrative
- High School Senior
- Out of District Acceptance
- Out of District Release (for current school year only)
- Severe Hardship
- Sibling Exception
Please refer to the Transfer Types & Requirements for more information.
-
What documents do I need to upload to my application?
Each application type has different requirements. Please refer to the Transfer & School Assignment Procedures page for detailed information about each transfer type.
-
Can I apply for more than one High School Program of Study in case the student does not get accepted into my first choice?
No, only one application per student may be submitted. If the application is denied, a new application for a different program/unique offering may be submitted before May 1st. If a program is available at the student's zoned school, the student is not eligible to apply for the program.
-
Do I have to reapply for the same transfer every school year?
No, once a student is approved, the transfer is granted through the highest grade on that level*:
Pre-Kindergarten: Reapply annually
K-12 Elementary: 5th grade
Middle: 8th grade
High: 12th grade
Certain transfers may require proof to continue or renew the approval.
*Sibling Execption Transfers based on a sibling approved to attend pre-k out of zone are temporary and expire at the end of the school term. Both siblings must return to their zoned school the following year if a new/renewed transfer is not granted.
