PROGRAMS

Richland School District One’s repertoire of Extended Day Programs assist the District and community with keeping students safe during the after-school hours, providing quality child-care to assist working parents/families, curbing youth violence, enhancing the health and well-being of students, reducing/preventing youth crime, reducing risky behaviors, offering academic remediation and academic assistance, impacting teen pregnancy prevention, influencing truancy and drop-out prevention, impacting character and leadership development, and establishing vital community partnerships as a means of intervention to engage students in meaningful, positive activities.

The following is a menu of the various before- and after-school programs offered by Richland One in the 2015-2016 school year:



AFTERSCHOOL CHILDCARE PROGRAM
The After-School Child Care Programs are provided through agreements with schools and licensed child-care providers approved by the district. These programs provide a safe place for children to go after school, where they can receive services that will enhance their social and educational growth and development. These programs operate Monday through Friday, from 2:30 p.m. until 6 p.m. and are located at all of the district's 28 elementary schools, and one middle school (Southeast Middle School). ATHLETIC TUTORIAL PROGRAMS
Athletic Tutorial Programs are located at each middle and high school across Richland County School District One. Athletic Tutorial Programs are open to all students however, these programs are mandatory for students participating in competitive co-curricular activities and who are in danger of falling below the 2.0 grade-point average required by the district for athletic team participation. The students/student athletes must attend at least three times a week for a minimum of 2 hours each session. Athletic Tutorial Programs are hosted during the extended day hours. Schedules vary among the schools.-

COMPREHENSIVE REMEDIATION PROGRAMS
Comprehensive Remediation programs are offered at each of the 28 elementary and nine middle schools in the district. The program operates three days a week for two hours a day and is designed to increase students’ achievement on district benchmark tests and state assessments by providing individual instruction. This program also focuses on students’ skill deficiencies on the Palmetto Achievement Challenge Test. -



PRIORITIES
21st Century Community Learning Centers Program

This program is funded through a four-year grant from the S.C. Department of Education. The program is designed to improve the academic achievement of students at Burton-Pack Elementary, Greenview Elementary, Hyatt Park Elementary, Webber Elementary, Alcorn Middle, Gibbes Middle, W.A. Perry Middle, and C.A. Johnson High Schools. It operates five days a week for three hours per day and provides students and parents with a variety of services to improve their quality of life. Additionally, the program offers artistic, cultural enrichment opportunities for students and their families when school is not in session, i.e. before school, after school, during holidays, and/or during summer recess.-

OTHER PROGRAM INFORMATION

During the development of each program the school or private vendor is required to provide a proposal for each specific "Program Purpose," along with related information describing the program design, implementation, fiscal impact, and evaluation component of their program.


There are three basic "cores" or dimensions of the Extended Day Programs:


Academic Core
The academic core consists of reading, mathematics, social studies and science. The program provides one-on-one college and adult tutors and homework assistance, according to the needs of the students. Students work on developing academic skills in computer labs and use the Internet to access the resources for school assignments and projects. At each school site, teachers provide direct instruction and work with collaborating community partners on tutoring, instructional strategies and homework assistance.


Enrichment Core
The enrichment core is designed to provide students with a variety of activities including, but not limited to, music, drama, physical activities, motivational speakers, crafts, the performing arts and dance. The arts offer an alternative for success to students who struggle academically. Involvement in the arts also helps students understand the importance of hard work, self-discipline and commitment to excellence.


Intervention Core
The intervention core is designed to provide students with best-practices, strategies, and sponsored programs to divert students from risky behaviors.

Extended Day Programs assist the District and community with keeping students’ safe during the after-school hours, providing quality child-care to assist working parents/families, curbing youth violence, enhancing the health and well-being of students, reducing/preventing youth crime, reducing risky behaviors, offering academic remediation and academic assistance, impacting teen pregnancy prevention, influencing truancy and drop-out prevention, impacting character and leadership development, and establishing vital community partnerships as a means of intervention to engage students in meaningful, positive activities.

Students who are experiencing social, academic, personal development are identified and referred to the Office of Extended Day Program as a means of healthy intervention.

All the above programs are staffed with a site coordinator or lead teacher, certified teachers, instructional assistants, college tutors and community volunteers.
