As early as elementary school, students who miss just two school days each month are more likely to fall behind in reading, writing and math, even if the absences are excused. While some challenges to a child’s attendance are unavoidable, it’s important to understand the impact of each absence.
Dear Carver-Lyon Stakeholders,
I am thrilled to be joining the amazing staff and school community of Carver-Lyon Elementary as your principal. I am Mrs. Linda Pratt and I come to you from Jacksonville, Florida where I served as a school administrator for ten years.
My education path of twenty-four years has included teaching in three states at multiple levels and serving as a school administrator. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Michigan State University, a Master of Arts in Special Education from the University of Michigan, and a Master of Arts in Education Supervision and Administration from the University of Phoenix. I have a South Carolina Professional Educator’s Certificate with certifications in elementary education, special education, and school principal for elementary and secondary levels.
Carver-Lyon is a proud Title 1 School in the heart of Columbia’s Historic Waverly Community. Carver -Lyon serves approximately 410 students from Pre-K to Fifth Grade. Title 1 funding allows for continuous professional staff development, varied resources and equipment to support classroom instruction, focused academic and social interventions, and family engagement. In addition, Carver -Lyon is 1:1 with technology including iPads and laptops from KD to Fifth grade.
Carver-Lyon is proud to house Richland One’s Language Immersion Program. Our program offers families the option for their students to learn either Spanish or Mandarin Chinese through an immersion model. Beginning in Pre-K, students spend 50% of their instructional day in a Spanish or Mandarin Chinese classroom. Students learn to read, write, speak and listen in the target language all through the meaningful context of math and science. Currently, the program runs from Pre-K through 2nd grade.
In addition to Language Immersion, students at Carver-Lyon actively particpate in AVID. The AVID approach believes in building relationships with students, setting high expectations, and developing an environment of collaborating, inquiry, and organization. AVID schools and staff believe in equity, teacher effectiveness, and developing student leaders. To read more about AVID, please follow this link http://www.avid.org/what-is-avid-elementary.ashx
It is my firm belief that all students can succeed. I believe all stakeholders have a voice in the success of a school. My goal is to serve the students, staff, parents, and stakeholders of Carver-Lyon with a positive, respectful, and prideful manner. I will make it a priority to ensure that each student will succeed to the best of their ability, to listen and respond to concerns, and make decisions in the best interest of the school and for Richland One School District.
I am looking forward to meeting each of you and honored to be serving with you at Carver-Lyon Elemenatry.
To a Successful Year,
Mrs. Linda Pratt
