Words We Know

Grade level:  Kindergarten       Subject:  Reading

1) Core Curriculum Objective:  Recognize and respond to common signs and symbols (including, but not limited to classroom labels, environmental print and everyday signs). 
(K-AR-1)

2) Overview:  Students will bring signs and labels that they can read on bags, cups, napkins, etc. These items will be displayed on the walls in the classroom. The students will "read the walls" daily with the teacher. They will then explore bookmarked web sites on the computer to see how many of the words that they have been reading can be found.     

3) Purpose/Essential Questions:     Are there words that you already know how to read?

 

4) Time frame:  10 minutes per class daily to read the words on the walls 30 minutes per child on the computer to explore web sites

6) Assessment:

Students will read words found in the environment and on the web sites.

 

Teacher will use a checklist to assess each child.

Student recognizes and reads words found in his/her environment.      

7) Instructional Activities:

The teacher will display items that children have brought from home which have words that they recognize and read. Students will spend several days reading the "words on the wall" with the teacher. The teacher will then show students how to find previously bookmarked web sites and locate words that they have seen on the walls in the classroom.
