4) TIME FRAME:  One 45 minute lesson.

A collection of sorting materials

Who Doesn't Live Here - Rubric

Sort objects by attributes

2 Three objects with the same attribute and one with a different attribute.
1 All four objects have the same attribute.
0 All objects have different attributes.

7) INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES:

1. Review sorting by displaying items from the sorting collection (shells, attribute blocks, marbles, buttons, etc.).

2. Select one of the items, such as a red block and hold it up so that everyone can see it.  Ask students to identify other items from the collection that like this block in some way.

3. As students identify items, place them in a set together. Have students tell how the items are alike.  Ask what the sorting rule is.  Did they sort by color, size, shape, of type?  Ask if they wee anything that does not belong in the set.

4. Repeat this procedure using new sorting rules each time.

5.  display materials and sort out a set of three items with the same attribute.  Include one item that does not fit the sorting rule.  Have students identify the misplaced object and explain why it does not belong in the  group.

6. Give each student a copy of the sorting sheet.  Tell them that they are going to practice sorting.

7. Explain that they are going to look at the collection of sorting materials and find 3 things that could live in the same house together and 1 thing that does not belong in the same house.  They will place the items in the four rooms on the sorting sheets and ask classmates to find the one that does not live in that house.

8. Once students find the outsider, they must explain why it doesn't belong in the house with the other objects.  If they cannot explain why, the student who collected the objects will explain how he/she sorted the items and why one does not belong.

9. Students will sort several groups of objects.  Once they have exhausted the supply of items in their collection, they can draw things on their sorting sheets.  Encourage them to use their imaginations when they draw and not to be limited to things found only in the classroom.
