Making Calls

Core Curriculum:  State home telephone number.  (KSSG-2)

Overview: The teacher will discuss "what is a telephone number" and the importance of learning their telephone number. The students will make a telephone book to use in the housekeeping center.

Essential Question: Do you know your telephone number?

Time Frame: One lesson, 20 minutes

Resources: chart paper Magic maker Each student's telephone number written on sentence strip One piece of paper for each student Pack of crayons for each student One or two telephones (real ones if possible)

Assessment: Rubric Can state all the numbers in their telephone number. Proficient Can state five of the numbers in their telephone number. Partially proficient Can state less than five numbers in their telephone number. Needs Development

Instructional Activities:

1. Tell the student, "Today you are going to learn your telephone number. Ask the question, "What is a telephone number?" Brainstorm about what they think a telephone number is. 

2. Tell the students most people have a telephone number. Ask the questions "Why do you think it is important to learn your telephone number" 

3. Make a list of reasons on chart paper. 

4. Give students their telephone number that is written on sentence strip. 

5. Divide the class in groups of four. Let students in each group say their numbers to each other. 

6. The teacher will walk around to each group listening for correct telephone numbers and encourage others to try. 

7. Bring class together. 

8. Tell the students they are going to make a telephone book. Show the students a blank piece of paper and model for the students, how to write their telephone number, draw a self -portrait, and write their name. 

9. Give each student a piece of paper and a pack of crayons. Tell them to copy their telephone number from the sentence strip, draw a self- portrait and write their name. 

10. The teacher will walk around the room encouraging students to write the numbers correctly, draw pictures about themselves, and write their name. 

11. Select a student to illustrate a cover for the telephone book. 

12. Collect pictures and make into a book. 

13. Put telephone book and telephones in housekeeping center. 

14. During center time, show students how to use the telephone book to call a friend and use the telephones. Encourage students to use telephone manners. 

15. Get permission from student's family for students to call home or office to share "good news" from their child. Always encouraging students to learn their telephone number and to use telephone manners.
