Organize, record, and communicate data (such as bar graph, picture graph, etc.).  (KSP1-3)

Read and interpret data to make comparisons and answer questions.  (KSP1-4)

2) OVERVIEW: >Students will collect, organize, and record data about themselves and the class.  They will include this data in a time capsule that they will open at the end of the year.  They will make comparisons using new data and the data from the time capsule at the end of the year when it is opened.

 

3) FOCUS/ESSENTIAL QUESTION:

How can you collect data?

How can you formulate questions based on data?

How can you organize data?

How can you make comparisons and answer questions using data?

 

4) TIME FRAME:  One 45 minute class period at the beginning of the year.  One 45 minute class period at the end of the year.

 

5) RESOURCES/MATERIALS:

A box or other container

Large graph paper

Camera/Film

Paper

Photograph of each student

My Favorite Things  survey sheet

 

6)  CULMINATING ASSESSMENT:

Teacher observation/students' ability to collect data by completing a survey, formulating questions based on this data, recording data on a bar graph, and making comparisons and answering questions about the graph.

7) INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES:

1.  Tell students that they are going to make a class time capsule.  Ask if they know what a time capsule is.  Brainstorm with students the kinds of things to include in a time capsule.

2.  Give each student a sheet of paper and ask them to draw a picture to tell about themselves.  Help them to include information about themselves that may change, such as their weight, height, or how many teeth they may have lost.  When they have completed this information, students can place their sheets in the time capsule.

3. Distribute copies of  the My Favorite Things survey.  Read it aloud to students and help them record the information needed.

4. Explain to students that they will complete the survey. Again at the end of the year.  (Do not put the surveys in the time capsule yet).  

5. Divide the class into four groups.  Have each group use the data on the My Favorite Things survey forms to make a graph.  (Each group will use just on of the topics on the survey).

6.  Allow a few days for students to collect or create other things that they want to include in the time capsule.

7. With the students, seal the time capsule and choose a date near the end of the year to open it.

8.  Just before the time to open the time capsule, have the students complete the My Favorite Things survey again.

9.  Have groups make new graphs using the new data.  

10. Ask students to look at their completed surveys and graphs to compare how they have changed as individuals and as a group.  

11.  Have students draw new pictures of themselves.  Take photographs, also, for comparison.

           *Sample guided questions:

·      Which was the favorite color of your group?

·      Which color was the least favorite?

·      Has your favorite TV show changed?

·      Look at your photograph.  Do you look different now?  If so, how are you different?

·      Look at your handwriting sample.  Has it changed?
