Space Exploration Missions

Designed By: Canisha Fletcher       School: Hand Middle

Grade Level: 8th    Subject: Science

School State Curriculum Standards Objectives:
1) Summarize some of the programs that have allowed people to explore space. (IV.A.2j)
2) Explain how space probes, satellites, and telescopes have increased our knowledge of the space and the solar system. (IV. B.2i)

Restatement: Using research skills and computer skills, students will explore and discuss the various space exploration missions.

Projected Class Size: 30

Overview: Students will work in pairs to create a 7 slide Power Point Presentation on the contributions of past, present, and future space exploration missions.

Focus Questions: 1) What are some space exploration missions? 2) How has space exploration improved the quality of life on Earth?

Time Frame: 3- fifty-minute class periods outside of the class 1- fifty minute class period in the classroom
Note: Time frame may need to adjusted depending upon student familiarity with PowerPoint.

Resources / Materials:
- Science Interactions - Course 3- Glencoe- McGraw
- Scheduled Media Center Time (1 class period)
- Scheduled Computer Lab Time (2 class periods)
- Computers with Internet access and Power Point program in the lab and classroom
- Copy of Lesson Rubric (one for each student)
 - Copy of Research questions (one for each student)
 - Copy of PowerPoint Presentation Format (one for each pair)
- 3 1/2" Floppy Disk (one for each pair)
- Large Screen TV in classroom with graphics card hardware for presentations
- Copy of suggested web sites (one for each student)

Suggested Web sites:
- http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/history/index.htm
- http://liftoff.msfc.nasa.gov
- http://www.askjeeves.com

- Encyclopedia Grolier On-line (use Discus to access)

Culminating Assessment: The pairs will create and present a PowerPoint Presentation. They will be evaluated using a rubric and a peer evaluation will be conduction at the end of the activity.

Instructional Activities:

Activity One - Research- 1 class period
1) The class period prior to using the Media Center place the students in pairs (teacher - selected or self - selected). Pass out the rubrics and remind the students that a peer evaluation will be conducted. Before the students begin inform the students that the world has not always been as technologically rich as it is today. We must study the past to understand the present and to add to the future.

Once the pairs of formed, assign each pair one the following topics to research:
 - One of the Planets (excluding Earth)
- The International Space Station
- Mir
 - NASA's History
- National and International Space Explorations excluding the planets

  • from 1957 - 1966
  • from 1967 - 1979
  • from 1980 - 1989
  • from 1990 - 2000
  • 2001 +

2) Pairs will use the Internet and print resources in the Media Center to conduct research to answer the research questions. See Attachment 3) Pairs must document research for presentation. 4) Teacher should monitor the progress of the pairs.

Activity 2 - 2 class periods- Power Point Construction

1) Prior to the students using the computer lab, the teacher should create a folder for each class on the network. Ask you Media Specialist or Resident Technology Specialist for assistance and where to locate files, if needed. It is easier and saves time when doing the presentations. The students will also save their presentations on the Floppy in case the network is down on the day of the presentations.

2) Pairs will use one computer to create a 7 slide Power Point Presentation.

3) Instruct the pairs to type all of the text before adding graphics, sound, and animation to the slides. It saves time. Text should be between 24 font and 32-font size.

4) Instruct the pairs to use the appropriate Power Point Presentation Layout. See Below.

Presentation Layout for the Planets:

Slide One: Title Slide, include group names

Slide Two: Planet Description

Slides Three - Five: Answers to Research Questions

Slide Six: Summary of Contributions

Slide Seven: Works Cited

Presentation Layout for International Space Station

Slide Seven: Works Cited

Presentations for Non- Planet Space Explorations

Slide One: Title Slide, include group names

Slides Two - Five: Answers to Research Questions

Slide Six: Summary of Contributions

5) Teacher should remind the pairs to frequently save work and should monitor the progress of the pairs.

Activity 3- Presentation Class- 1 class period

1) Prior to the presentations, the teacher should prepare the large screen TV. Connect the graphics card hardware to the computer and TV and access presentations from the network. Ask the Media Specialist or Resident Technology Specialist for assistance, if needed.

2) Pairs will present the Power Points Presentations to the class. The class (the audience) will answer the questions on the Space Exploration Mission Information Sheet while the pairs are presenting. See Attached.

Extension: Print the presentations to display in the classroom and the hallway.
