OVERVIEW: Students will find the range, mean, median, and mode from a set of data in newspaper and from the internet.

FOCUS/ ESSENTIAL QUESTION(S): What procedures are followed to find range, mean, median, and mode?

TIME FRAME: One 45-50 minute periods - one period for reviewing and activity

RESOURCES:
- Gateways to Algebra and Geometry (p. 40,221, 222, 228), for reference

ACTIVITY ONE

* The teacher will review what these terms mean: Range- the difference between the largest and the smallest given numbers Mean- the average of the numbers Median- after placing the number in order, it is the number in the middle (or in the case of an even number of numbers, find the average) Mode- the number that occurs the most

* Students will be given a copy of temperatures from the newspaper and will find range, median, mean, and mode. * Students will fill in the data gathering sheet. (below)
