OVERVIEW:
In this lesson students, working as partners,
will enhance their knowledge of Piracy and the
characters that earned the title of
"Buccaneer". The students will also
enhance their technology skills through the use
of search engines.
PURPOSE/FOCUS
QUESTION(S):

Why did people become involved in an illegal
trade such as Piracy?

What sorts of people became involved in Piracy?

Where did the word Buccaneer come from? What did
it originally mean?

Can you find the names of 5 Pirates who sailed
Carolina waters? List them.

Who was Mary Read'? Write a paragraph and in
your own words tell Mary's story.

Who was Edward Teach and what was his nickname?

ASSESSMENT:
Students, directed by their teacher, will
read and observe the Internet sites and answer
the questions listed above. Completion of the
assignment and individual participation will
count toward the total grade.
INSTRUCTIONAL
ACTIVITIES: Students will participate in a
teacher led orientation to the assignment. This
will be a follow up to reading about pirates in
our texts. Using Searchopolis and a personal
search for Pirate information as well as the the
following sites:

students
will answer the focus questions (above) and be
prepared to share their information with their
classmates.
