Perimeter, Area, and Volume

Designed by: Sally Hug, Hand Middle School

GRADE LEVEL: 8th    SUBJECT(S): Math

CORE CURRICULUM OBJECTIVE(S): Develop and understanding of perimeter, area, and volume. (8GE6-1)

RESTATEMENT: Students will find perimeter, area, and volume of given objects.

OVERVIEW: Students will find perimeter, area, and volume of given objects that are provided by he teacher.

FOCUS/ ESSENTIAL QUESTION(S): What methods and procedures are used to find perimeter, area, and volume?

TIME FRAME: Two 45-50 minute periods - one period for finding perimeter and area - one period for finding volume

RESOURCES:
- Gateways to Algebra and Geometry (p.52, 61, 64, 150), for reference
- Rulers
- Paper/pencil
- Notebook paper
 - Rubric
- Data sheet
 - Magazine pictures or posters in room
 - 3-D figures (cubes, prisms, pyramids)

ASSESSMENT: Students will correctly find perimeter, area, and volume of given objects with and without concrete objects through data collecting.

INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES:

ACTIVITY ONE

* Students will review the process for finding and calculating perimeter and area of regular shapes, squares and rectangles). The teacher will provide students with rulers, data gathering sheets, and concrete objects, that will be used to measure.

* Students could be placed with partners: one person is "A" and the other is "B". The "A's" measure and get 10 items and "B's" measure 10 items. Partners will meet back and exchange information found.

 * As partners will find perimeter and area together. * Teacher should work through one example first.

ACTIVITY TWO

* Students will review the process for finding and calculating volume. The teacher will provide students with rulers, data gathering sheets, and concrete objects, that will be used to measure.

* As partners, as above, students will measure 10 different objects and then return to seat to find volume. Each partner will find 5 and together the volume will be found.

 * Teacher should work through one example first.
