Day One

Activity One

Students should choose a partner to work with of their choice unless there are enough computers for each child to have his own.

Students visit 1st  website  http://edie.cprost.sfu.ca/~rhlogan/metric.html

Students will study and read about the metric system and its history.  Students should record 5 facts in their folders.  Students should then take the 10 problem quiz on the site and record the questions and answers in their folders.  Students can check their answers at the website.

Activity Two

Students visit 2nd website  http://lamar.colostate.edu/~hillger/everyday.htm

Students should print the chart of the metric and customary systems and put these in their folders.   Students will use these charts for future reference when studying the metric system.

Activity Three

For homework students are to interview 10 people.  Occupations are to be recorded and how they use the customary or metric system in their work.  This assignment would be good to do over a weekend or at least a two day period.

Day Two

Activity One

Visit 3rd website  http://lamar.colostate.edu/~hilger/frame.htm

Refer to previous day's focus questions.  " What in this classroom is about 5 meters long?" " Is there anything in this classroom that weighs about 5 kilograms?"  Students may want to change their answers from the previous day. Instruct student to now go to the 3rd website.   Record 4 examples of familiar items in connection with the metric system in the measurement folders.

Activity Two

Visit  4th website   http://lamar.colostate.edu/~hilger/common.htm

Students should print the charts of commonly used customary and metric units and their symbols and place in the measurement folder.

Activity Three

Visit any additional websites that pertain to measurement in customary or metric units.  Record the website and a brief summary of what you found in your folder.

Activity Four

Write a paragraph describing  at least 3 examples in which the  metric and customary systems  are used in every day  situations. Include this in your folder.

This folder will be a reference guide for measurement throughout the year.  Students will be able to add to the folder when obtaining additional, valuable information for the study of measurement.
