Noun Book

Designed by:   Lisa A. McClain, Hand Middle School

1) CORE CURRICULUM OBJECTIVE(S):

* Edit for spelling by identifying and correcting misspelled words (plurals, possessives).  (6-WE-3) (PACT:  IV.A.4, IV.A.9, IV.I.3)

* Edit for capitalization (proper nouns).  (6-WE-4) (PACT: IV.A.4, IV.A.9, IV.I.3)

RESTATEMENT:  Students will edit their writing to correct errors in usage of plurals, possessives, and proper nouns.

GRADE LEVEL: 6th        SUBJECT(S):  Reading/Language Arts

2) OVERVIEW:  Students will create a book all about the different types of nouns.  While all types of nouns will be discussed and included in the books, plurals, possessives, proper nouns will be emphasized.  As an alternative to making books, students could create PowerPoint presentations.  Each page discussed on the assessment sheet would be a different PowerPoint screen.

3) FOCUS/ESSENTIAL QUESTION(S):

* What is a plural noun and how do you make a noun plural?

* What is a possessive noun and how do you show possession?

* What is a proper noun and how is a proper noun correctly written?

4) TIME FRAME:  It will take approximately four fifty-minute periods to create the noun books.  (If creating PowerPoint projects instead of books, it may take a longer time period.)

5) RESOURCES:  assignment sheet, rubric, markers, pens, crayons, colored pencils, old magazines from which pictures may be cut, large white paper for the books, glue, scissors, yarn to display the books (The hall, lunch room, or media center are good locations for displaying student work since many people visit these areas of the school.)

6) ASSESSMENT:  Each student will create a book of nouns, which defines and gives examples of various types of nouns.  They will also provide the rules for making nouns plural and possessive.  They will be assessed using the provided rubric.

7) INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES:

* (This lesson is to serve as the culminating activity for a unit of instruction on nouns.)

CREATIVE SECTION:

* Pass out the project assignment sheet.  Read over the project content answering any student questions.  Students are to create a book, which will show their understanding of nouns.  On the cover, students should include a title for their book, their name, and an illustration or picture from a magazine.  The first page will be the table of contents and should include a listing of the information in the book.  Page two will contain a definition of a noun, an example, and a sentence.  The sentence should have all nouns underlined.  The third page will deal with common nouns and include an example with all common nouns underlined.  The next page will discuss proper nouns.  They will be defined and an example sentence will be given.  Singular nouns will be on page five.  On page seven, the student will define plural nouns. They will also give the rules for making nouns plural and provide underlined examples in a sentence.  The final page will be on possessive nouns.  The student will list the rules for creating possessives and provide examples.

* Pass out the project rubric and discuss how the students will be assessed.

* The teacher should model the process for folding the book.  See directions at the end.

* Pass out the paper to be used for the books.

* As students fold their books, the teacher should again model the process.  Students find this process very confusing the first few times they do it.

* Students should complete a rough draft prior to beginning the project.  This can be easily done by drawing eight boxes on notebook paper and sketching in what you want to include on that page.

* Using the assignment sheet, magazines, and coloring tools, students are to create a book, which defines and illustrates the various types of nouns.

* Once projects are completed, they should be displayed in the hall, cafeteria, media center, or other appropriate location.  The noun books could also be sent to an elementary class for use in their class library or in their study of nouns.

NOUN PROJECT

Assignment: You are to create a mini-book based upon the unit of nouns, which we just completed. You are to follow the directions listed below. Directions for folding the paper to make the book will be given in class. Your project will be graded for accuracy, completeness, neatness, and how well you followed the directions.

Cover: The cover should include a title for your book, the author's name (that's you!) and an illustration. Page 1- Table of Contents: This page should include a listing of the information in your book. It will also tell what is on each page.
Page 2- Nouns: You need to define a noun on this page. You also need to give an example of a noun and use it in a sentence. Page 3- Common Nouns: Define a common noun on this page. Give an example of a common noun, and write a sentence containing at least one. Underline the common noun.
Page 4: Proper Nouns: What is the definition of a proper noun? Give an example of a proper noun and write a sentence containing at least one proper noun. Underline it. Page 5- Singular Nouns: What does it mean for a noun to be singular? Give an example, and then write a sentence in which all the singular nouns are underlined.
Page 6- Plural Nouns: What is a plural noun, and how do you make nouns plural? Give several examples. Write a sentence, and underline the plural nouns. Page 7- Possessive Nouns: What does a possessive noun show? List the three rules for making a noun possessive. Write a sentence that contains at least one possessive noun. Underline it.
