Mean, Median, and Mode

Core Curriculum Objective(s): Student will describe and calculate the mean, median, and mode as measures of central tendency and determine their meaning for a set of data.  (6SP1-7)

Overview: Students will measure the heights of a group of four and then work out mean, median, and mode and explain how these statistics might be used to demonstrate the average height for 10-12 year old.

Focus/Essential Question(s): How can you find the mean, median, and mode of the heights of 6th grade students?

Time Frame: (1) 50 minute class period

Materials: Measuring tape, pencils, paper, markers, poster board

Culminating Assessment: Student will record the heights of students in their group, find the mean, median, and mode of the heights, and combine this with data collected from whole class to make a display.

Instructional Activities: Teacher will review mean, median, and mode.

1) Students will be divided into groups of four. 

2) Students will measure each other's heights in feet and inches. 

3) Students will record this data on paper. 

4) Students will find the mean, median, and mode of the heights. 

5) Students will share this information with other groups and find the mean, median, and mode of the heights of the entire class. 

6) Students will record this information on a poster/ Students choose how to represent the data. 

7) The posters will be displayed in the classroom for other classes to view.
