GRADE LEVEL: 6       SUBJECT:  Reading/Language Arts (Listening)

1) CORE CURRICULUM OBJECTIVE(S):  Listen for specific information (details, sequence, definition, inference, predict outcomes, draw conclusions, distinguish informative from persuasive messages). (6-LS-4) (7-LS-4), (8-LS-4)  [PACT II.A.4]

RESTATEMENT: Students will listen to a set of instructions to complete a drawing.

2) OVERVIEW: As a warm-up while seated, students will listen to a set of oral directions and follow each command.  After the initial warm-up activity, students will listen to a set of instructions to complete a drawing.

3) FOCUS/ESSENTIAL QUESTION:  Can you complete a drawing following a set of oral directions?

4) TIME FRAME:  One 30 minute period.

5) RESOURCES: 

Unlined paper & pencil

6) ASSESSMENT:  See rubric that follows the lesson.

7) INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES:

ACTIVITY ONE

Students sit at their desks.  They stay seated while the directions are being read.    Read the directions slowly and check their positioning.  The following directions can be changed or modified. 

1. Lower your head to your chest and stay seated.

2. Close your eyes.  (Later if students are out of place, have them open their eyes and check their positioning.)

3. Lift your head and face me.

4. Raise your left foot.

5. Raise your right hand.

6. Shake your head three times.

7. Lower your left foot.

8. Cross your left foot over your right foot.

Students should freeze; check their position.  At this time additional directions can be given. 

ACTIVITY TWO

Read the following set of oral directions.  Students will draw their picture on unlined paper.

1. In the middle of the page, draw a square.

2. Inside the square, draw a circle.

3. Inside the circle, draw a triangle.

4. Shade the triangle.

5. At the top of the page, draw three circles of equal size.

6. In the center circle, draw a triangle.

7. In the left circle, draw a cross.

8. Draw a circle around the right circle.

9. At the bottom of the page draw a line. 

10. Write your name on the line.

11. Above the line draw a rectangle.

12. Draw a curvy line inside the rectangle.

In pairs students will review their work.
