Overview
: In this lesson, students will present
information about the Industrial Revolution through oral
presentations, charts, diagrams and displays. This
lesson may be used in conjunction with the social
studies unit on the Industrial
Revolution.

ASSESSMENT:
The
student’s performance will be assessed daily via
teacher observation. The final invention assessment is the invention presentation.
A sample rubric is provided.

INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES:
1.Focus
Activity: The students will brainstorm about what they
would like to know about the Industrial Revolution.
2.Teacher
will inform the students that they will be studying
these areas and others.
3.Students
may self-select a cooperative groups of four or five
students to complete this project.
4.Teacher
will provide the students with a list of possible
inventions. Topics
may include: flying shuttle, spinning jenny, steam
engine, power loom, cotton gin, telegraph, telephone,
and the Bessemer process.
Students may use http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/Britain.html
for excellent information about inventions during this
period.
5.Each
group will select an invention to research.
6.Students
will use lists, webs, or outlines to develop and
organize content.
7.Each
group will prepare an information poster providing a
detailed step-by-step 8.description of the process
involved in the invention they have selected.
9.Rubrics
for the poster and oral presentation will be given to
the students.
10.Teacher
will review the criteria for each assessment and answer
any questions.
11.Groups
will be given time in class to work on the poster. The
teacher will provide the students with feedback during
this process.
12.Groups
will give an oral presentation on their assigned
invention and use their poster as a visual aid.
13.Students
may also use power point during their presentation.
14.Posters
may be displayed in hall or the media center.
EXTENSION
ACTIVITIES:
During
Black History Month, follow this lesson format and have
students present information on an invention by an African American.
Coordinate
with science teacher and have student report on
scientific inventions from specific inventor or time
periods.
