Core Curriculum Objective(s):
The students will apply the concepts of percent to solve real world problems involving unit price, best buy, commission, interest, sales tax, discount, and  percent of
error/increase/decrease. (6NA6 - 3)

*This bold-faced portion of the objective will apply to this lesson.

Solve multi-step application problems involving fractions and decimals in a variety of real world context, including unit price, and present data and conclusions in paragraphs, tables or graphs. (6NA6 - 4)

Overview: The students will complete activities that involve multi-step problems to solve real world problems that require the students to apply the concepts of percent to compute unit prices, best buys, commissions, interest, sales tax, and discounts.

Focus/Essential Questions:
* When you go shopping what is always added to the price at the cash register?

* What operation would you use to compute sales tax on the cost of an item?

* What is the sales tax for South Carolina?

* Do we have the same sales tax for all fifty (50) of the United States? Why or why not? If not, then what would be some possible explanations for this?

Time Frame: One to two 50-minute class periods

Culminating Assessment: This rubric will be used to access the achievement of students when they complete activities from this lesson. These activities will involve multi-step problems to solve real world problems that require the students to apply the concepts of percent to compute unit prices, best buys, commissions, interest, sales tax, and discounts. Students will receive ratings in the areas indicated by the rubric; these ratings will show which students met the objectives(s) and which students need additional practice with using percents.

Instructional Activities:

1. The teacher should lead the students through the focus/essential questions.

2. Next, the teacher should complete some sample sales tax problems on the overhead. See Appendix A. The teacher should monitor the students' responses to make sure that students are n the right track.

3. The teacher will divide the students into pair and give them copies of Appendix B.

4. The students' task is to figure out how much the Smith family spent on their vacation traveling by car from Columbia, SC to a destination of the students' choice. The trip must include at least five different states. The items purchased are included. The students should simply use the tax tables available at http://www.taxadmin.org/fta/rate/sales.html to decide how much tax is required for the item. The tax should be added to the cost to arrive at a total cost. The students must decide on the states that their trip will take them.

5. They won't be spending money for lodging because they will be staying with family and friends along the way.

6. Once all pairs have finished the work, then the teacher should lead the students through the answers. Students could volunteer to do the work on the overhead or the teacher could chose one student from each pair. The teacher should monitor all parts of the answers providing feedback where needed.

Appendix A - Sample Sales Tax Problems

1. Mary bought a sweater for $25.00. If the sales tax is 7%, what is the sales tax amount? What is the total price when the sales tax is added to the cost of the sweater?

2. Sammy bought a bike with his birthday money. If the bike's price was $252.50 and if he paid 6% sales tax, how much did he pay in all for the bike?

3. Anthony bought a new coat for school. The price was $129.00. The sales tax was 5%. How much were the tax and the total cost of the coat?

4. Teresa bought a McDonald's combo for $3.49. If the tax is 5% how much will she pay for the combo?

5. Susan bought a new CD at Target for $14.99. If she paid 5% tax, how much would the CD cost her?

Appendix A - Sample Sales Tax Problems KEY

1. Mary bought a sweater for $25.00. If the sales tax is 7%, what is the sales tax amount? What is the total price when the sales tax is added to the cost of the sweater?

* Mary has to multiply $25.00 by .07 tax.
* $25.00 x .07 = $1.47 in sales tax
* $25.00 + 1.47 = $26.47 for the sweater

2. Sammy bought a bike with his birthday money. If the bike's price was $252.50 and if he paid 6% sales tax, how much did he pay in all for the bike?

* Again, you have to multiply the money, $252.50 by .06 tax.
* $252.50 x .06 = $15.15 in sales tax
* $252.50 + 15.15 = $267.65 for the bike

3. Anthony bought a new coat for school. The price was $129.00. The sales tax was 5%. How much were the tax and the total cost of the coat?

* Multiply $129.00 by .05 tax.
* $129 x .05 = $6.45 in sales tax
* $129.00 + 6.45 = $135.45 for the coat

4. Teresa bought a McDonald's combo for $3.49. If the tax is 5% how much will she pay for the combo?

* Again, multiply $3.49 by .05 tax.
* $3.49 x .05 = $0.17 in sales tax
* $3.49 + 0.17 = $3.66 for the McDonald's combo

5. Susan bought a new CD at Target for $14.99. If she paid 5% tax, how much would the CD cost her?

* Multiply $14.99 by .05 tax
* $14.99 x .05 = $0.75 in sales tax
* $14.99 + 0.75 = $15.74 for the CD
