BON VOYAGE MATH

Designed by:   David K. Blackwell, Gibbes Middle School

1) CORE CURRICULUM OBJECTIVE(S):    Solve multi-step application problems involving fractions and decimals in a variety of real world context, including unit price, and present data and conclusion in paragraphs, tables or graphs. (6NA6-4)      [11.E.1]      [11.E.2]

RESTATEMENT: Students will solve multi-step fraction and decimal "real world" problems which include unit price and will present the data and conclusion on two requistions.

GRADE LEVEL: 6th       SUBJECT(S):  Math

2) OVERVIEW:     This lesson could be used at the end of the decimal and fractions unit to allow students to apply their knowledge of decimals and fractions. In groups of three, the students are to plan a party for two exchange students who are leaving at the end of the semester for their home countries. $350.00 has been raised during the semester to pay for the decorations, the food, and the DJ. In order to stay within their budget they must comparison shop for all of the items they need. They must find out the number of each item that they need and need to find the unit prices of these items. As a whole group, the students should decide on the menu and the party theme. Once this has been done, they must work in their groups to complete the rest of the lesson(s).

3) FOCUS/ESSENTIAL QUESTION(S):

1. Have you ever stopped to think about which would be cheaper, to buy a candy bar at a mini-mart or buy a bag of ten candy bars at a grocery store?

2. Why do we need to know the unit prices of items being sold?

3. Can you name businesses that have to know the unit prices of items?

4. When solving multi-step problems, what steps do we need to take in order to

solve the problems correctly?

4) TIME FRAME:    Two or three class periods (45 - 50 minutes each)

5) RESOURCES:

7) INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES:

DAY ONE

1. Begin the day, by asking the focus questions to help students begin to think about how math is used in the real world.

2. Use the "What's the price?" worksheet to guide the students through an activity on unit price.

3. Once the first activity is completed, present the overview of the lesson and divide the students into groups of three. You can allow the students to decide on their partners or predetermine the groups. (You should assign or let the students in each group decide who should have the roles of Leader/Reader, Recorder, and Timekeeper to ensure that their groups work efficiently.)

4. Pass out the rubric and review the criteria and what is expected of the groups.

5. Pass out materials, including a folder or large envelope, and the Von Voyage Planning worksheet.

6. Let the different groups spend the rest of the period planning the theme, decorations and menu for their Von Voyage Party. The teacher should monitor the class to assist as needed.

7. Provide closure for the last five minutes of the lesson by having groups give a brief overview of their plans. Tell them what they will be doing on Day Two. Have groups turn in their work folder.

DAY TWO

1. Have the groups get back together. Give them their work from Day One.

2. Tell them that they are going to complete two requisitions (These will be the tables on which to present the data.), one for food and one for decorations.

3. Provide them with catalogues, newspaper circulars, etc. (You could also give them extra credit if they bring circulars from their home newspapers and/or from local stores.) Remind the groups that they should provide the unit prices and give the subtotal on the requisition. Decide whether you will require them to figure the tax. If you have not taught this, this would be a good place to introduce sales tax.

4. Remind them that they have a total of $350.00 to spend.  Tell them to figure $150.00 for the DJ. Let decide whether they want an to spend the money on the DJ or plan an alternate way to have music at the party.

5. Once the groups have finished with their calculations, let them share what they found out about math in the real world while going through the process of planning their Von Voyage Party.
