Core Curriculum Objective(s): Analyze sentences: to combine, expand, or rewrite to vary length, type, structure; for clarity and style; to distinguishing between clearly written sentences and sentences containing errors. (5-WD-3)

Cooperative groups will locate examples of an assigned part of speech to create a poster that will be shared with the class. Students will complete an informal assessment about the poster. A formal assessment on parts of speech will also be completed and scored.
Focus/Essential Question(s): How many different kinds of words are there in our language?

Instructional Activities:
Activity One:
Tell the students the following story: Imagine that you have gone to meet the richest man in the world. He tells you that he will give you all his money if you can tell him how many kinds of words there are. What would your answer be? You know that there are thousands of words in the dictionary, but are there thousands of kinds of words?
Display the transparency of the word list. Tell students that they will be putting the words into categories. Separate students into cooperative groups. Groups will discuss the words in the list and determine which words belong together. (Grouped words should be recorded by each student.) Teacher will monitor and assist as needed. After all groups have finished categorizing the words, call on groups to share how many categories of words they found.
After all groups have shared how many categories of words they found, tell the students that if they are ever presented with a challenge like this one, they will be prepared to answer the question. Tell them that all the words in the list can be placed in eight piles or categories and that the eight kinds of words are called parts of speech. Call on groups to call out a category of words from the word list and name the corresponding part of speech. The teacher should then discuss the function of that part of speech. Repeat this process with the remaining seven groups, making sure that the students correct any words not placed correctly.
Challenge cooperative groups to create sentences using a word from each part of speech. Share sentences orally.
Show students the web site: http://ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/. Show the home page to the class and then go to "Power Point Presentations". There is a power point presentation called "The Parts of Speech". (This is a huge file and downloading takes a great deal of time. The teacher may want to already have this presentation ready to run.) After view and discussing the power point presentation, students can take online quizzes at the "Interactive Quizzes" area of the web site. (Note to teacher: Quizzes may be completed using the classroom computer(s) or in the computer lab if one is available. Individual teachers will need to decide which plan will work best in their own situation.)
Activity Two:
Remind students of the eight parts of speech from Activity One. Tell students that they will be finding examples of the different parts of speech in newspapers and magazines. Separate students into eight groups and allow one member of each group to select a slip of paper from the container. (The slips of paper contain a name of a part of speech.) Once a part of speech has been selected, groups will be given a large piece of plain paper (Newsprint) and some magazines and newspapers. One member of the group will need to write the part of speech at the top of the paper in fancy writing while the others begin searching for examples for that part of speech. Once finished writing the part of speech, every member of the group will be searching for examples in print. When an example of the assigned part of speech is located, students will cut it out and attach it to their paper. (Note to teacher: You may want to tell students that the some examples need to be in bold writing so that they can be read anywhere in the room.) The teacher will need to monitor and assist as needed. (If a group has difficulty finding examples of the assigned part of speech, it is possible to allow them to print out examples at the computer.) Students may return to the web site:
http://ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/ and explore the various areas if the poster is finished early.
Allow groups to share the completed "Parts of Speech" posters. As the posters are shared, the teacher should lead the group to make any necessary corrections (words which are misplaced) and discuss words which could appear on two different posters. After all posters have been shared, allow students to complete the Parts of Speech Poster Assessment.
Activity Three:
Distribute the Final Assessment to the students. Students will complete the assessment as described in the Culminating Assessment.
