information contained in a: schedule, atlas, calendar,
encyclopedia, and multi-media and technology based

research information about their destination. Students
will find an airline flight to their destination, noting
arrivals, departures, and times. The groups will research
and plan at least three activities to enjoy on the trip
and research the history of the destination. Students will
find out the weather conditions for their chosen city.
Each pair will complete a calendar outlining their flight
information, activities to be enjoyed and correctly
placing the numbers on the calendar. Students will find a
picture of their destination from a magazine or the
internet, or they can choose to hand draw a picture. Each
group's work will be displayed on a classroom bulletin
board, either inside the classroom or outside in the
hallway.

Instructional
Activities:
NOTE: This lesson is expected to take four class periods
of 50 minutes each and assumes that students know how to
use the internet and search for topics. This lesson also
assumes that students have been taught how to read
schedules, use a calendar, encyclopedia and an atlas. This
lesson provides students to practice using these
materials. Extension activities are provided at the end of
this lesson.
Activity 1:
Students should be allowed to choose a partner to work
with for this assignment or the teacher may assign
partners based on their level of knowledge in using the
internet, for example, pair a strong internet user with a
weaker one. Students should be given a copy of the
culminating assessment pages so they will understand
expectations and the grading scale for this assignment.
The teacher should explain that each pair is responsible
for planning and researching the topic, completing the
culminating assessment pages, and displaying the project
on a bulletin board. The students should use an atlas to
determine their destination for their vacation. They
should choose a major city anywhere in the world where an
airport is located. The teacher may need to assist with
this portion of the assignment. The students should write
their destination on the assignment sheet they were
provided. The students should begin searching the internet
for sites related to their destination.
Activity 2:
Students should continue searching the internet for sites
related to their destination. Students should begin
planning their trip by locating an airline flight and
writing this information on the assignment sheet. The
teacher may need to assist students in reading the
schedules and translating this information to the
assignment sheet. The students should begin filling in
their calendars, including the month the trip will occur,
writing the numbers on the calendar (making sure that the
"1" is placed in the correct square for that
month), and the year. Students can transfer the flight
information onto the calendar.
Activity 3:
Students should continue searching the internet for sites
related to their destination. Students may want to print
out a picture of their destination from the internet to
include in their assignment. They should begin reading
about and deciding on activities they want to do while
they are on their vacation. (For example, if the students
choose New York City, they may want to visit Macy's, Ellis
Island, and the Empire State Building.) Students should
describe where they want to visit and tell why they want
to visit those sites. This information should be written
in a paragraph. Students should decide when they want to
visit these sites during their trip and write those places
on the correct day on the calendar. (For example students
should write on their calendar: July 16, Ellis Island,
July 17, Macy's, July 18 Empire State Building) Next,
students should find out what the weather is in the area
they are visiting. This information can be easily found in
an encyclopedia or on the internet.
Activity 4:
Students should use the internet or encyclopedias to
research the history of their destination. Students should
be looking for information about the settlement of their
destination, any interesting facts about this place, and
any other information the students would like to include.
The teacher may need to assist students during this
portion of the assignment. Students should write this
information in paragraph form on their culminating
assessment activity sheet. Additional pages may be
attached if necessary. A picture of the destination should
be glued (if it is from a magazine or the internet) or
drawn on the appropriate page of the activity sheets.
Students should check over their work to make sure all
information has been completed. Student pairs may want to
trade activity sheets and check each other's work to make
sure all information has been completed. Once this has
been done, students should staple their completed activity
sheets on a teacher designated bulletin board. The teacher
will use the checklist rubric to assess this assignment.
