Activity
One: The
teacher will gather the students together and read
The
Paper Bag Princess aloud.
Discuss the humor and surprises in the
story.
Next, show them the Robert Munsch web site
http://www.robertmunsch.com/index.cfm
Read
Robert Munsch’s biography together.
Have
students work in pairs.
Tell them to go to the web site and read some
of his poetry.
How are the poems different from The Paper
Bag Princess?
Tell them to choose a favorite poem.
Print the selected poems for each student.
Tell
the students to plan a way to share the poem with
the class. They
can choose between acting out the poem using props
and costumes or they can illustrate the poem on
poster board. They
must also memorize the poem and be ready to recite
it to the class. Tell them that you will be sending the illustrations and
pictures of them to the author so they should do
their best. Give the teams time to plan.
The teacher should monitor the teams’
discussions and encourage them to be creative with
their product.
Give them time today and tomorrow to work on
their idea.
On
the third day, the students should be ready to make
their presentation. Take pictures of each team as
they are presenting.
Take one class picture of them in costumes
and holding up the posters.
After each presentation, have the rest of the
class tell the team 3 things they liked about the
performance. The
teacher should use the checklist to assess the
product.
Send
the illustrations and pictures to Robert Munsch.
He posts some of these pictures on his web page.
Check often to see if yours made it.
