will ask the students to recall all the multiple meaning

Teacher will record them on index cards and display
on the board. Students
will then make their own multiple meanings flip book.

Culminating Assessment: Students
will create a “Words with Multiple Meanings” flip book.
The students will think of words that have more than
one meaning and write them in their books.
Then they will write the words in a sentence.
They will also illustrate each word in the correct
context. The
teacher will assess the flip book using the following
rubric:
| Points
|
Criteria
|
| 0 |
Book
is not complete or done incorrectly (words weren’t
written, sentences did not make sense and/or
illustrations did not match)

7) Instructional Activities:
Activity
One:
Begin
by sharing some jokes from the web sites http://www.users.bigpond.com/lander/jokes2.htm(joke5&11)
http://www.users.bigpond.com/lander/jokes3.htm(joke3)
http://www.users.bigpond.com/lander/jokes4.htm
(joke 10), containing multiple meaning words.
Ask students to tell you why they are funny. Then ask the students to share their own jokes they have
heard, with multiple meaning words.
Draw a large wristwatch on the board.
Ask them why you drew a watch.
Lead them into saying it is a multiple meaning word.
Write the multiple meaning words from the jokes you
told or read on colored index cards and tape them inside the
wristwatch. Ask
how the words are the same and how they are different.
This should lead to the definition of words with
multiple meanings. Have
students brainstorm additional words that have more than one
meaning and add them to the list on the board.
Explain
to the students that they are going to make their own "multiple
meaning" flip book.
Let each student pick two words from the board.
Give them the index card with the word on it.
Let them choose a partner and together they will
publish the book. Give
each pair a piece of white paper.
Tell
them to fold it in half the long way, fold in half again and
one more time. Tell
them to unfold the paper twice but to leave it folded the
long way. Tell
them you want them to listen while you give all the
directions. Tell
them they now have a piece of paper folded in half with four
boxes. They are
going to write their names in the first box and a title.
Then they will write a word in each box.
After, they will cut on the lines of the fold to make
the flip book. Tell
them that on the outside, they will write the word in a
sentence and illustrate.
On the inside, they will write the same word in
another sentence using the another definition, and
illustrate. It
should look like this:
| Names_____________
__________________
Words with multiple meanings
__________________
1.
|
2.
Fold here |
3. |
4. |
Give
the children a chance to decide where they are going to put
their words. Have
each pair think of two sentences for the first word.
Before they begin, have a few children share their
sentences so you can give feedback.
This will help some of the children further
understand what they are doing.
Once some feedback has been given, tell the children
to begin. While
the students are making their books walk around and give
individual help to the children.
When
the children are finished, have them choose another couple
and share their book with them.
Then collect the books and grade them using the
rubric. Display
the books in the library or scan on the school’s web page,
or e-mail the books to another second grade class so they
can read them.
To
close, ask the students why they need to know about multiple
meaning words (helps them with reading – the context)
Tell them that they will become better readers in the
future if they know
that some words
have multiple meanings.
Extension:
Read Amelia
Bedelia’s Family Album and discuss all the words that
have more than one meaning.
Also, I have attached a multiple meaning word search.
You can print and give to the children.
The sheet is attached below.
